The Heart of Man, Part 1

Scriptural text — Genesis 6:5

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Now the word translated “heart” is l¯eb, with an accent over the e, to make its pronunciation long. And its synonym, leba¯b (same mark over a in word). They occur 860 times in the Old Testament. The law, prophets, and Psalms speak often of the heart.

Heart: mind, midst…leb may refer to the inner part, or middle of a thing; whereas lebab can be used for the inner man in contrast to the outer man as in Deut. 30:14, “But the Word is very nigh thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.” I Samuel 16:7, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the lord looketh on the heart.”

The heart could be described as the seat of desire, inclination, or will; it can also be indicated by the word heart. For instance: Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, Exo. 7:14, and in Psalms 86:12 leb is used in an exaltation of praise: “I will praise thee oh Lord my God, with all of my heart.”

The part of man referred to as the heart can be regarded as the seat of emotion, the seat of knowledge and wisdom, and a synonym of mind. These references came from Vines New Expository of Old and New Testament Words.

So we can say that the heart represents the essence of who we are. That is why Prov. 23:7 say: “If his heart is not with you, do not eat at his table.” Those are mighty instructions for us when we are trying to understand why we feel no closeness sometimes, even when in close proximity to the person/persons.

As we peruse this and other Messages that follow, we are only trying to position ourselves to have hearts that are pure. For Matt. 5:8 tells us that “only the pure in heart shall see God.” That means the landfill of Matt. 15:19 must be cleansed by the washing of water of the word, purified by the blood of Jesus, so that the nature of God/love may take up its proper place in our hearts.

God is looking on the hearts. He searches our hearts, minds, and thoughts for qualities that are pleasing and acceptable in His sight.

What We Believe:

We conduct spiritual warfare. It begins with us as we speak God’s word and speak to our bodies, minds, and emotions. Therefore we make a faith confession which says: “Satan, in the Name of Jesus, I declare this body a sickness-disease-free zone. Every germ, virus, bacterium, etc., that touches this body dies instantly in the name of Jesus, who bore my sicknesses, carried my diseases, and by whose stripes I have been healed. Therefore I command life into every cell in this body, I receive healing for my emotions from every past embedded hurtful, fearful memory. I speak active deliverance from the law of sin and death, according to the finished works of Jesus the Christ, the anointed and His anointing.”
